The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and EDGE
In order to protect endangered species, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) has developed a system called EDGE (Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered). This system is used to determine which species should be given priority for conservation.
According to EDGE, the top three mammals that should be given priority are the mountain pygmy possum of Australia, the aye-aye of Madagascar, and Leadbeater’s possum of Australia.
The EDGE list of reptiles has highlighted the distinctiveness of Australia’s turtles, such as the Mary River turtle (Elusor macrurus). To further refine the system, ZSL has developed an updated version of EDGE that more accurately accounts for uncertainties and factors such as the endangerment of related species.
Effects of the Improved EDGE System
The system has been improved, and this has had varying effects on the rankings.
The baiji or Yangtze river dolphin (Lipotes vexillifer), which was the highest-ranked species on the first EDGE list, is now believed to be extinct.
Wildlife of Madagascar Tour
In order to help support the conservation of endangered species, ZSL is offering a tour on September 1, 2023 for 16 days, exploring the Wildlife of Madagascar.
This tour will provide an opportunity to gain insight into the unique species of Madagascar and the initiatives being taken to conserve them.
The EDGE system is an important tool in aiding the prioritization of species for conservation.
The improved version of EDGE is expected to increase the number of species that can be preserved for future generations.
