Alex Murdaugh, a plaintiff’s lawyer from South Carolina, is on trial for the alleged murders of his wife Maggie and son Paul.
Murdaugh was employed at a private litigation firm founded by his great-grandfather.
Prosecutors allege that Murdaugh had been accused of stealing from his clients and colleagues, with an estimated amount of $3.7m (£3m) in a single year.
Murdaugh has reportedly confessed to the theft, citing an addiction to oxycodone as the cause.
If convicted, Murdaugh could face life imprisonment for both the murders of Maggie and Paul and for nearly 100 additional financial charges.
Victims’ Characteristics
Maggie Murdaugh was characterized as kind and laid-back, a stay-at-home parent and devoted parent to her two sons.
Paul Murdaugh was an undergraduate student at the University of South Carolina and was facing three charges associated with an incident in 2019 involving a boat.
His brother, Buster Murdaugh, had graduated from Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and had intentions to join his father’s business.

Alex Murdaugh and Mr Smith were both charged in connection with an incident that occurred on a rural road one Saturday, in which Murdaugh asked Mr Smith, a handyman and former logger, to shoot him in the back of the head.
The Murdaughs reported that their housekeeper, Ms Satterfield, had died in a trip-and-fall on the front steps of their home.
It was later revealed that two of Alex Murdaugh’s insurance policies had paid out $4.3m, but the Satterfields had not received any of the money.
In response, South Carolina law enforcement announced they would be exhuming Ms Satterfield’s body.
A mobile phone video was taken at the Murdaughs’ dog kennels by Paul approximately five minutes prior to the alleged homicides.
The video featured the Murdaughs’ golden retriever, Bubba, who is now in the care of Blanca Turrubiate-Simpson, a former employee of the Murdaugh family.
