Tragedy Leaves Thousands Homeless

At least 43,360 people have been reported dead following the earthquake that occurred on Feb. 6 in Turkey and Syria, leaving many people without homes and in need of aid.

Rescue crews have been working diligently to locate and extract survivors from the debris, and have been successful in rescuing several individuals. Rescue workers in Hatay province and Kahramanmaras were able to locate and extract Hakan Yasinoğlu, 45, and Neslihan Kilic, 29, from the debris of collapsed buildings after they had been trapped for 278 and 258 hours respectively. In the city of Antakya, police rescue crews retrieved 17 bodies and rescued two men from the debris of a collapsed hospital. Additionally, a 12-year-old boy named Osman was found alive.

Aid and Assistance

Turkey has been providing aid to those affected by the earthquake, with 178 trucks carrying aid from Turkey into northwest Syria crossing the border since Feb. 9. Additionally, 1,522 Syrians have been brought back to Syria from Turkey for burial. On Wednesday, 1,795 Syrians crossed from Turkey into Syria, following the agreement that allowed refugees impacted by the earthquake to return to their country temporarily without losing their protected status in Turkey. Spain has announced that they will take in some 100 Syrian refugees in Turkey who have been affected by the earthquake. The Turkish Vice President reported that the state is currently providing care for 1,589 children who were separated from their families in the earthquake, with 247 of them yet to be identified.
